Epilepsy (Seizure Disorders)
Gabapentin is used as an add-on treatment for partial seizures in adults and children 3 years and older with epilepsy.
Typical Dosage:
- Adults: Starting dose 300mg three times daily, may increase to 1800-3600mg daily
- Children (3-12 years): 10-15mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses
Postherpetic Neuralgia
Treatment of nerve pain that follows healing of shingles (herpes zoster) rash in adults.
Typical Dosage:
- Day 1: 300mg once daily
- Day 2: 300mg twice daily
- Day 3 onwards: 300mg three times daily
- Maximum: 1800mg daily in divided doses
Neuropathic Pain
Treatment of various types of nerve pain conditions (off-label use).
Typical Dosage:
- Starting dose: 100-300mg at bedtime
- Maintenance: 300-600mg three times daily
- Maximum: 3600mg daily
Dosage Guidelines
General Dosing Principles
- Always start with the lowest effective dose
- Increase gradually as directed by your healthcare provider
- Take with or without food
- Space doses evenly throughout the day
- Swallow capsules/tablets whole with water
Dose Adjustments
Dosage may need adjustment based on:
- Kidney function
- Age (elderly patients)
- Response to treatment
- Side effects experienced
- Other medications being taken
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose:
- Take it as soon as you remember
- If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose
- Do not double dose to make up for a missed dose
- Contact your healthcare provider if you miss multiple doses
