Common Side Effects
These side effects are experienced by more than 1 in 10 people taking gabapentin:
Most Common (>10% of patients)
Drowsiness & Fatigue
Feeling tired, sleepy, or lacking energy. Usually improves with continued use.
Dizziness
Feeling unsteady or lightheaded, especially when standing up quickly.
Coordination Problems
Difficulty with balance, unsteadiness, or clumsiness.
Swelling
Swelling of hands, feet, or ankles (peripheral edema).
Less Common (1-10% of patients)
- Blurred or double vision
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weight gain
- Tremor or shaking
- Memory problems
- Difficulty speaking
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
- Headache
- Mood changes
Serious Side Effects
Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of these:
Suicidal Thoughts
Thoughts of self-harm or suicide, especially in the first few months of treatment.
Allergic Reactions
Rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
Severe Mood Changes
Unusual changes in mood, behavior, or mental state.
Important Warnings
Withdrawal Symptoms
Do not stop taking gabapentin suddenly. Stopping abruptly may cause withdrawal symptoms including:
- Anxiety and agitation
- Insomnia
- Nausea and flu-like symptoms
- Seizures (in rare cases)
Always consult your healthcare provider before stopping or reducing your dose.
Drug Interactions
Gabapentin can interact with other medications, including:
- Opioid pain medications
- Sedatives and sleeping pills
- Antacids (may reduce absorption)
- Alcohol (increases drowsiness)
